Living room beam option

To remove the column in the living room the following is required:

  1. The locations where the posts hit the foundation will need to be enlarged to handle the weight of the load above.  This means we would have to cut holes in the foundation and dig footings.  Then form and pour piers against the foundation walls with rebar pinned to existing foundation.
  2. Chimney would need to come down sooner since we would need a big machine to lift the beam into place and that couldn't be done after framing is in the way.
The extra cost for This work would be $5k - $6k

  1. trying to make a decision here, but need to undersatnd what impact a beam will have in regards to lowering the ceiling height relative to obstructing the view.
Can you let me know how low the beam and the "wrap" (to hide it) will hang off the ceiling? Concerned that the ceiling heigh is already low and this will make it feel "cramped" and would obstruct the open view that we are trying to create by removing the chimmney?
With that said...I prefer to not have a post in the middle of the room, but the answer to the above will help me make this decision.
